Well, one thing we are left wondering is what could possibly be the “drop of Anguish / That scalds me now – that scalds me now!” Elsewhere, in her eleven “Volcano” poems (see comment of November 20, 2022, on F165, ‘I have never seen "Volcanoes"—’), she tells us she has pent up memories deep inside herself that she cannot reveal without causing immense pain for family and friends.

One clue about that “drop of Anguish” is “what "Peter" promised” in Line 5, which was eternal faithfulness to Jesus to the point of death, a promise Peter broke three times before daybreak. Note that ED puts the name Peter in quotation marks, clearly intending a different name. My guess is that a careful scan of early ED letters to Susan would find some mention of promised eternal mutual love, no matter what, and that ED, despite her positive letters and poems concerning Ned’s birth in June, felt deep abandonment.

We have no evidence that ED shared ‘I shall know why – when Time is over’ with anyone, for good reason. In 1890 T.W. Higginson chose this poem along with thirteen others for publication in an article he contributed to the magazine, Christian Union. I doubt he understood its true meaning.
Larry Bnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4029797379711350813.post-63034082997992620072023-01-12T16:47:13.313-08:002023-01-12T16:47:13.313-08:00Thank you for your interpretation. Emily’s poems appear so simple sometimes, but are so deep when truly studied.
